Cambodia is rebuilding its educational system from the ground up after years of upheaval. To aid in this effort, Room to Read Cambodia has led in the field of literacy and girls’ education and works as one of the national government’s primary partners improving Cambodia’s quality of education.

Reimagining education and resilience in Cambodia

Amid Cambodia’s challenging history, generations of children have remained stuck in cycles of limited opportunity — especially those living in more remote and under-resourced regions. The World Bank estimates that 90 percent of 10-year-olds in the country cannot read a simple text, resulting in persistently high illiteracy rates.

For girls, cultural norms and economic uncertainties result in high drop-out rates, dramatically limiting girls' future potential.

The consequences of these challenges are clear: a lack of education will continue to perpetuate cycles of poverty, gender inequality and life outcomes for all children.
Compounding these challenges are the unprecedented learning losses from the pandemic, catastrophic inflation and increasingly severe climate disasters, all straining access to the resources needed to improve educational standards.
