Room to Read Tanzania works with the government to scale efforts that ensure the best results in primary school literacy education. Our work also safeguards girls’ rights to quality education, supporting them to stay in school, improve their standard of living and contribute to national development.


Since 2012, Room to Read has partnered with local schools, communities and governments in Tanzania to deliver our literacy and girls’ education programming to support children across the country. Our work safeguards every child’s right to a quality education, helping them to stay in school, improve their standard of living and contribute to national development.

Since the inception of Room to Read’s Literacy Program in Tanzania, we have established a history of collaboration with communities and district-level governments, with many districts interested in replicating our instruction model with teachers beyond the direct implementation of our program. We have been widely recognized as an expert in book publishing by the Tanzanian government as we have been asked to help develop the country’s National Storybook Guidelines while simultaneously building up the local book publishing industry to create more high-quality storybooks.

We couple our literacy achievements with supporting girls in their transition into secondary school by working with parents at the community level and providing necessary life skills to help adolescent girls make informed decisions. Tanzania is one of two countries where we embed financial education into our life skills curriculum to prepare girls for adulthood. Across both our literacy and girls’ education programs, we work closely with the government and are well-positioned to further support national local government officials to continue the sustainability of our programs.
