Literacy is the foundation for all future learning yet nearly 800 million people are illiterate, two-thirds of whom are women and girls. Even with increased access to school, many children in primary school aren’t learning the basics, the result of inadequate teachers, funds and school infrastructure challenges. It gets worse for girls in secondary school when female student enrollment sharply drops, due to societal and economic challenges.
Room to Read envisions a world in which all children can pursue a quality education that enables them to reach their full potential and contribute to their communities and the world. Founded in 2000 on the belief that World Change Starts with Educated Children®, Room to Read is creating a world free from illiteracy and gender inequality. We are achieving this goal by helping children in historically low-income communities develop literacy skills and a habit of reading, and by supporting girls as they build skills to succeed in school and negotiate key life decisions. We collaborate with governments and other partner organizations to deliver positive outcomes for children at scale.
This fall, Room to Read is partnering with Citi for the 10th consecutive year on their e for education campaign! Citi’s e for education campaign runs for two months this year, from September 5th to October 31st, to raise funds for education-related non-profits. During the campaign, Citi's FX business donates $1 for every $1 million of FX traded with Citi via a broad range of electronic platforms.
Since 2013, Citi's e for education campaign has raised more than $7 million for Room to Read - the equivalent of teaching more than 145,000 children to read and write for a year.
