IMC celebrates extended commitment to education across Africa and India | July 23, 2024
Last week, IMC Trading hosted its annual Trading & Gaming Day for Charity — donating a full day’s trading revenues to Room to Read’s Literacy Program in Africa and India. This year’s event marked a significant milestone in our eight-year partnership with IMC, celebrating the firm’s renewed commitment to support our expanding literacy programming throughout Africa and India in the coming years.
IMC’s annual Trading & Gaming Day for Charity returned on July 16 this year. The firm's biggest charity event of the year, the initiative runs for a full 24 hours, with global trading revenues donated to Room to Read.
IMC traders and team members from across the world united for the special day, with celebrations starting in Sydney and continuing through Mumbai, Amsterdam and Chicago.
Esports organization Team Liquid joined the cause, hosting a 24-hour charity livestream to raise awareness and funds for Room to Read. Players Alixxa, Mayumi, Lourlo, Ruben de Ronde, DeMu, Skillous, Areliann and Eiya all contributed to the stream, rallying support for global literacy from gaming fans worldwide.
Thanks to IMC and Team Liquid, the event raised funds to benefit thousands of children across Tanzania, South Africa and India with foundational learning skills.
In 2024, Room to Read received the largest commitment to Africa in our organization’s history — $30 million over the next five years — from IMC. By extending their partnership through 2028, IMC has created a tremendous opportunity for Room to Read to accelerate our efforts across India and several countries in Africa, supporting us to proactively tackle the ongoing education crisis and benefit more children, more quickly. This next phase of investment from IMC is estimated to benefit nearly 5.7 million children in Africa and India by 2028.
In October 2023, IMC employees visited our programs in Tanzania, South Africa and India, witnessing first-hand what their support makes possible in communities across the region: colorful, child-appropriate libraries; engaged students; teachers who are equipped to foster a love of learning; and families, communities and school systems that prioritize education.
As a longstanding Room to Read partner, IMC's transformational investments have enabled us to scale our literacy initiatives across Tanzania and South Africa, creating significant, long-lasting improvements in learning across the two countries. Having recently extended their support to India, IMC is ensuring children are able to break the cycles of illiteracy in their families, achieve strong literacy outcomes and unlock their futures through a quality education.
From 2016–2023, IMC invested $27 million into Room to Read’s Literacy Program in Tanzania, South Africa and India, helping:
We’re grateful for IMC’s dedication to creating a world free from illiteracy. This dedication has helped create change for millions of young learners who have unlocked their inherent right to a quality education.
